Earthworks bring together young people, ages 14-16, who grow and sell fresh produce as part of a job-readiness program. It began to give at-risk kids in El Monte a place to learn job skills and life skills to better their future. The teenagers work in teams, planting, harvesting, and selling flowers and vegetables at the weekly produce stand. They also harvest vegetables to give to area food banks.
School counselors tell California Heartland that a high percentage of kids in this program dramatically improve their grades, attitude and overall success in school and life.
