The Ag Traveler

The Sonoma Valley town of Petaluma was once the known as the egg capitol of the world. Today, its agricultural base and tourism revolve around grape growing. California Heartland’s Melanie Kim visits three spots that have nothing to do with wine. First visit The Chileno Valley Ranch where California Heartland’s, Melanie learns to paint outdoors using the ranch’s lush agricultural landscapes as the subject, then head to The Garden Valley Ranch where she’ll stop and smell the roses among the 10,000 growing at this cut flower grower’s property. Lastly learn how to make sausage while grabbing a bite at Angelo’s Meats & Italian Taste.

Chileno Valley Ranch
Owned by Sally and Mike Gale. They raise grass-fed beef on the 600 acre ranch, which they sell locally and online. They raise organic apples in several varieties and sell organic eggs from free range chickens also living on the ranch. In addition to the growing operations, Sally’s passion is Plein Air painting. She schedules week-long workshops with notable artists which tourists can sign up for in advance and stay on or off the property during the series.

Garden Valley Ranch
Owned by partners Ron Robertson and Mark Grim. It’s an all organic 9-acre garden rose ranch featuring 100,000 blooming roses, 85 cut flower varieties and is one of only two producers in the US producing roses this way – no hot houses here. The roses are surrounded by gorgeous landscaping where tourists can stroll through, which features plenty of shade, a koi pond with cascading waterfall, fragrance garden, wild and domesticated ducks and chickens and an all white garden. Visitors can take a self-guided tour or make an appointment for a docent lead tour of the grounds.  You can purchase a bunch to take with you or order online and have them sent to your home.

Angelo’s Meats & Italian Taste
Owned by Italian police officer turned sausage king, Angelo Ibleto. Angelo spends his days making and smoking sausages and meats by hand in his downtown Petaluma shop. You can purchase andouille, chorizo, linguica, Canadian bacon and several kinds of Italian sausages from Angelo’s shop or online.
