Santa Cruz Farm Trails
The song "On the Road Again" could have been written for George
Reading. As the host of California Heartland, he hits the road traveling
all over the Golden State.
For example, on a day trip, George visited a number of farm trails throughout
Santa Cruz and Santa Clara Counties. The first stop was Gizdich Ranch.
Among the oldest in the valley, Gizdich Ranch is just one of more than
50 stops on the "Country Crossroads" farm tour. This farm tour
provides a map that takes you from picnic stops to "u-pick"
strawberry fields and berry patches. As you can imagine, you can easily
eat your way from farm to farm.
George's next stop was the Sierra Azul Nursery and Gardens. Here they
grow all sorts of plants that thrive in this Mediterranean climate. The
demonstration gardens are vibrant with color.
After two stops, by mid-afternoon George was ready to hit the Corralitos
Sausage Company. It's a genuine old-fashioned smokehouse. They make more
than 30 types of sausage, smoked meats and fish. Most of the ingredients
are homegrown in California.
