Hollywood legends Vivien Leigh and Sir Laurence Olivier were married
at this exclusive coastal retreat, set back in the Santa Ynez Mountains
near Santa Barbara.
"This is a very special getaway for people. It's a very sensuous
and sensual kind of experience," said Janis Clapoff, Managing Partner
of San Ysidro Ranch. The San Ysidro Ranch is a place where the rich and
famous seek solitude. But the historic San Ysidro Ranch has its roots
firmly planted in agriculture. The Ranch features some beautiful gardens.
In addition, in the 1700s, Franciscan monks used this as a way station
and it also served as a citrus ranch. In 1893 it was converted to a guest
ranch.
In the 1930s actor Ronald Colman and a partner bought the ranch and it
became known as the "haven to the stars." Laurence Olivier and
Vivien Leigh were married there. President Kennedy and his new bride,
Jackie, honeymooned there. So San Ysidro Ranch has long been a resort
for the rich and famous. If you'd like to stay in the cottage where the
Kennedy's honeymooned, it will send you back about $1,900 per night. A
larger, more luxurious cottage, the Eucalyptus Cottage, is available for
$4,100 a night. The view at the Eucalyptus Cottage is known to be spectacular.
All in all, the Ranch has 38 rooms/suites and 20 cottages.
The Ranch also has some exquisite gardens, which feature numerous fruit
trees, reminding guests of the Ranch's rich agricultural history. This
500-acre ranch is often reserved as the site of weddings and other special
events.
We met with Executive Chef Jamie West to discuss the award-winning cuisine
available at San Ysidro Ranch in the Stonehouse Restaurant or the Plow
and Angel Bistro. Guests can enjoy American regional cuisine for breakfast,
lunch or dinner. West enjoys the agricultural influence of the ranch.
"I plan the menu around the garden," said West.
