Imported treats and an art exhibit probably aren't things you'd expect to find in the middle of farm country. But nestled within fruit and nut orchards near Marysville, the Honda Food Culture Museum offers visitors a look and taste of Japanese culture.

"The purpose of this Museum is to promote the importance of food culture in the world, not only California, or in Japan, in the world." Explains Museum director, Toru "Tall" Matsushima.

The center is located on the grounds of Shoei Foods USA, a grower, packer and seller of dried plums, and a subsidiary of one of Japan's largest food companies. The two-story museum, which resembles a farmhouse, was founded by Shoei to show their appreciation for the company's trading relationship with the United States.

Not only does the museum showcase and sell foods from around the globe, including Shoei's own prunes, chocolates and candies, it also displays artwork by famed Japanese artist, Taikan Yokoyama, known for drawing a symbol of Japan, Mt. Fuji. The center also offers Japanese language classes and cooking classes, such as sushi making techniques, and there are plans to use the second level as living quarters for foreign exchange students who want to learn about California Agriculture.
