PROGRAM - 543
Grateful Bread

Pat McConahay visited the Grateful Bread Company, a small mom and pop organization based in Sacramento. Grateful Bread makes 25 different types of bread every day.

The unique name for the Company, a play on the name of that infamous musical group the Grateful Dead, was an idea the owners children came up with. Owners Joe and Diana Artim aren’t even fans of the group, known as "Deadheads." The play on the group’s name seems to work, though, as the store has a lot of grateful customers.

The Artims specialize in using ingredients grown in California in their popular bread, including raisins, garlic and walnuts.

Joe Artim is at the store bright and early at 3:00 a.m. to turn out 300 loaves of bread a day for the Sacramento store and a second location. Customers can watch the bread making process when they visit the store.

The Grateful Bread Company is generous with taste tests. And to keep the customers interested, Joe rotates the flavors of his bread so that there is something different every day. A schedule is put out every week of the daily offerings.
