CHADWICK

What do a northern California garden and a trendy Beverly Hills restaurant have in common? A talented young chef who also happens to be the son of actor Harrison Ford. Thirty-four-year-old Benjamin Ford recently opened his own restaurant, "Chadwick."

He named it for the gardens at U.C. Santa Cruz—gardens that were started 30 years ago by the late organic gardening guru Alan Chadwick. Ford is a follower of Chadwick’s methods which include something called the "French Intensive" style. Using raised beds, things are grown abundantly in a small space, while still using sustainable practices. People come to Santa Cruz from throughout the world for the apprenticeship program to learn the Chadwick methods.

Meanwhile, Ben Ford is duplicating the method in his two gardens, one of which is behind his restaurant. Ford grows herbs and other produce for the dishes he creates. The Chadwick menu combines California seasonal foods with a Mediterranean influence. Ford said he was not only inspired by some of California’s finest chefs, but by his parents. His mother is a fine cook and an artist and the discipline and creativity his father brings to the screen Ford brings to the kitchen.

Chadwick has a warm decor, designed by renowned interior designer Thomas Beeton. Located at 267 S. Beverly Drive in Beverly Hills, Chadwick is open for dinner Monday through Thursday from 6:00-10:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday beginning at 5:30 p.m. The restaurant also offers afternoon tea.
