| Wine Export
Outlook
Rich, robust, fruity, and fabulous…these are just a few words wine enthusiasts use to describe the Golden State’s prized beverage. Fine wine is currently California’s third largest export commodity and the future looks even brighter. Ann Pemberton with the Wine Institute explains, "The image of California is popular. Our freedom and sense of adventure captures people’s imaginations and people want a piece of that." Over 125 California wineries export to 165 markets worldwide. The largest export market is the U.K. followed by Canada, Japan, and the Netherlands. The top sellers are Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Dave Cancilla with David Berkley Fine Wines & Specialty Foods explains why these two varieties are so popular, "I think that these two wines have flavors that people are responding to. Chardonnay is rich with a lot of fruity flavor and buttery texture. Cabernet Sauvignon is more robust." Because of recent studies highlighting the health benefits of red wine, wines such as Merlot and Pinot Noir are also gaining in popularity. But, as with many industries, the competition is fierce. Ann Pemberton explains, "There are other wine producing regions of the world that are nipping at our heels very hard -- primarily Australia, Chile, and Argentina. These countries are, in many ways, helped by the exchange rate." While California winemakers continue to persevere, they already have plenty to be proud of…since 1990, wine exports have increased 300 percent! That calls for a toast!!!
