| San Luis Obispos Farmers
Market One of the most popular agricultural happenings on the Central Coast of California takes place every Thursday on Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo. While the event takes place in the evenings, the preparation lasts all day. California Heartland spent one Thursday with farmer Jerry Rutiz as he prepared for the Higuera Street Farmers Market. By 9:30 a.m., Jerry and his workers were already harvesting carrots, potatoes and cut flowers for the market. Nine hours later Jerry and his family are setting up their small produce stall for the festivities. It could just as easily be called the Thursday night Farmers Market, barbecue, theater, dance, street fair and social club. During peak months more than 12,000 people stroll through Higuera Street to taste, sample, smell and squeeze the goods. For a quick three hours the party rages. Then, just as quickly, it ends. For more information about the San Luis Obispo Farmers Market, contact the local Chamber of Commerce at (805) 781-2777 or visit their website at www.visitslo.com. |
