| RASPBERRIES As our host, George Reading, mentioned in the introduction to our story on raspberries, there is new evidence that consuming this fragile berry may help your body fight cancer. And it has other health advantages as well. One cup of Driscoll's raspberries has 9 grams of fiber, around 45 calories and more than 45% of the Recommended Daily Allowance for Vitamin C. Raspberries are low in fat and sodium, too! So if eating raspberries is healthy, how can you make sure your selecting healthy raspberries? Driscoll's, the largest marketer of raspberries in the country, offers this advice. Raspberries should be bright red and have a strong raspberry perfume. Avoid any berries that have structural defects or are moldy. Keep berries refrigerated, in their containers, until ready to use. Should you spot any moldy berries get rid of them right away because mold does spread quickly. Always rinse berries just before using. And berry flavors are at their best at room temperature. So take them out of the refrigerator an hour or two before serving. If you have questions or comments about this story, please E-mail our Producer/Reporter Pat McConahay at pmcconah@kvie.org. |
