The players may be getting hits at home plate, but fans aren’t scoring many points for their diet at the ballpark…even though the menu has been greatly expanded, including the menu at Raley Field, home of the Sacramento River Cats. According to Raley Field Concession Manager Josh Roben, "We’ve got gourmet nachos, burritos, pizza, Philly cheese steaks, vegetarian sandwiches. Yeah, we’ve got several vegetarian selections." You can also find different types of healthy chicken sandwiches at the stadiums these days…along with a wide selection of California wines. But while at the game, most fans seem to take a "time out" from their normal routine. Despite the new options, something about baseball and hot dogs go hand-in-hand. According to health experts though, you don’t have to resist all temptations at the game. You just have to choose carefully. Registered Dietitian Dana Wu Wassmer points out, "I would say your best choice would probably be the soft pretzel. There’s some calories in here, but very, very little fat. In fact, only about two grams of fat per serving of a whole pretzel." Dana says the item to avoid at the ballpark, isn’t hot dogs, but the nachos…which could start clogging your heart. Since the public became more aware of calories and fat, Concession Managers at the baseball stadiums started offering a whole new menu…including salads. Concession Manager Josh Roben adds, "We’ve got a fruit salad, a vegetable tray with a little dipping cup and then we also do a chicken Caesar salad. We also do a spinach dip tray, which is a good item. Do a cold pasta salad, which is a nice touch as well." Having a wide variety of foods to choose from is just another way for the teams to say thanks to the fans for their support.
