| Allensworth At the turn of the century, Allensworth was the bustling first African American township west of the Mississippi. Today it is a state park (40 miles north of Bakersfield) that is in need of restoration. It is the states first historic park that recognizes the contributions made by black pioneers. Allensworth was founded by Col. Allen Allensworth, a slave who became the highest-ranking black military officer of his time. He founded Allensworth in 1908 to escape segregation. Farming through a community garden was the economic mainstay of the town. Unfortunately, the community died out in the 1930s as its water sources were diverted north. Two special events are planned for later this year at Allensworth State Historic Park. Join them for Founders Day August 14, 1999 and Rededication Day on October 9, 1999.
