| Farmers Markets and
Family Festivals! From Northridge in the south, to Marin County and points north, farmers markets are now firmly rooted in our state. There are several hundred in California alone. Carolyn Olney is with the Southland Farmers Market Association in Los Angeles. She says, "I think farmers markets generate a sense of community because they take people back to their rural roots. So going to see a farmer who is from a rural area, you think youre around a small town square." Plus, youre interacting with the farmer when you buy the produce. You find out directly from him or her where its grown, how its grown, and perhaps pick up tips on how to prepare it. Farmers markets throughout the state have become much more than places to buy fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers. They provide activities that are as varied as the people and the produce youll find. This summer, the Southland Farmers Market Association has a bumper crop of scheduled events. Everything from planting tips from Los Angeles County Master Gardeners, to learning how to roll sushi, to special Fourth of July celebrations. The shopping experience is often enhanced by music. Sway to a Latin beat, to the festive sound of steel drums, or sultry jazz at the oceanfront Redondo Beach farmers market on Thursday mornings. If youre concerned about health, the popular "Ask the Dietician" program will be in full swing throughout the summer. Learn how to reduce the fat in your diet and pick up valuable nutrition tips. The Southland Farmers Market Association can provide a wealth of information about farmers markets and activities throughout Southern California. Call them directly at (213) 244-9190 and theyll be happy to help you. If you have questions or comments about this story, contact Executive Producer Corita Gravitt at corita.gravitt@mailexcite.com |
