Allensworth
At the turn of the century, Allensworth was the bustling first African American township west of the Mississippi. Today it is a state park (40 miles north of Bakersfield) that is in need of restoration. It is the state's first historic park that recognizes the contributions made by black pioneers.

Allensworth was founded by Col. Allen Allensworth, a slave who became the highest-ranking black military officer of his time. He founded Allensworth in 1908 to escape segregation.

Farming through a community garden was the economic mainstay of the town. Unfortunately, the community died out in the 1930's as its water sources were diverted north.
