La Purisima
One of the most satisfying things about traveling through the heartland is the history behind the growth of agriculture here. Everywhere we travel, the historical importance of California's agricultural past is evident. The roots of the heartland grow deep into California's mission system. And La Purisima is a striking example of farming as it was "way back when."

Muir Farm
There is a small farm in Contra Costa County that grows a few apples, pears and other fruits along with a small vineyard of grapes. It's meager by agricultural standards. But it is so historically important that it is now a national historic site. It was once the home of John Muir. Muir wasn't known as a farmer, but his environmental achievements are legend.

McArthur
Our cameras take us into the northeastern reaches of the heartland for a visit to a small but unique little town brimming with agricultural history. Allison Thompson is our guide for a trip to McArthur to discover the story behind the name.

Loomis Shed
An agricultural landmark recently closed its doors in the small community of Loomis and became part of heartland history. That closure marked the end of an era for one of the oldest packing sheds in the state. The Loomis Fruit Packing Shed packed, boxed and shipped locally grown produce. We visited the shed on its final day of operation.

McCloud
Our next story might come under the heading of "rewriting history." Mount Shasta towers over a small town that grew to prominence riding the crest of a successful timber industry. When timber became less profitable the town almost dried up. But legacies die hard in towns with histories like McCloud's, and the citizens refused to let their past die.

Ag Machinery Museum
There was a time in our ag history, before mechanization, that horsepower really was horse power…the four legged kind. Now, a lot of the machinery that displaced the horse has also been put out to pasture. There is a place, however, that is revitalizing many of these workhorses and turning them into prized museum pieces.
