Did you know that a medium sized tomato has 40% of the recommended amount of the vitamin C your body needs daily? That's a lot of vitamin C. Thank goodness tomatoes and tomato-based products are plentiful.
California grows 90% of all the processing tomatoes in the United States. That's a lot of tomatoes. Processed tomatoes can end up in ketchup, salsa, spaghetti sauce, tomato juice and tomato paste, among other items.
This is the heart of the tomato processing season. Truckloads of tomatoes are hauled up and down the highways, heading for tomato processing plants. California Heartland visited a PCP tomato processing plant in Lodi. PCP fills 300 million cans of tomatoes every summer. That's a lot of cans. Check the bottom of the can on your processed tomato product. If it is stamped with a 9T it most likely originated in the Lodi facility.
In order to keep up with the demand, PCP makes its own cans. When the product is sealed inside the can, the machinery can seal 500 lids per minute. That's a lot of lids.
From vitamin C to tomatoes to cans to lids. That's a lot of information.
