Humboldt Flowers

Who has provided flowers for such wide ranging events as beauty pageants, The 1996 Summer Olympics, weddings, and the Tournament of Roses Parade? None other than Sun Valley Floral Farms in Arcata, California. The little town in Humboldt County is home to Sun Valley, one of the largest flower nurseries in the world.

Every year, Sun Valley Floral Farms raises, cuts and sells more than 40 million flowers. Once the flowers are cut they're wrapped and shipped all across the country. They arrive with their petals closed so they'll keep longer.

In addition, California Heartland's Pat McConahay offers the following tips for making your flowers last even longer. First, use fresh, clear, tepid water. That's water on the cool side of lukewarm. Second, trim the stems frequently to prevent growth of bacteria. And finally, avoid preservatives.
