Loomis Fruit Packing Shed

Some are saying it's the end of an era. Last year, the historic Loomis Fruit Packing Shed in Placer County closed for good. It's not the end of fruit growing in the area, but it is certainly an end to the old historical part of it. Placer County was once a major player in the fresh fruit market. At one point, there were 22 fruit packing sheds in the county, many located in the town of Loomis.

Over the years, that number dwindled to just one: the Loomis Fruit Packing Shed.

And now, none.

According to manager Randy Hansen, the historic shed just couldn't compete with more modern packing facilities.

Plans are underway to convert the shed into a commercial center with stores, restaurants and a museum. So, the fruit packing may stop, but the shed itself will remain. That has softened the blow for locals, who recall the integral part the shed once played in the community.

Says Lorene Larsen Owen, "The fruit packing shed will always be here whether it's here as the Loomis Fruit Growers, it will always be in my memories even though there might be something else here."
