You could say the Cameiro Heifer Ranch in the Imperial Valley is a health spa for cows. But these heifers are pampered for a purpose. And that purpose is to help them produce more milk.
Cows arrive here from throughout California to receive nearly two years of some special tender loving care that the dairyman doesn't have time to provide. "The more the cows are accustomed to being around people the better they feel about being milked when they are sent back to their home dairy," said Jerry Craveiro, a third-generation dairyman and co-owner of Cameiro Ranch.
Heifers are young cows that haven't had a calf so they aren't producing milk yet. One of the services the heifers receive at the ranch is artificial insemination to get them to produce that all-important calf.
Heifers are carefully tracked and detailed records are kept on each one throughout their 19-month stay. With 100,000 cows processed in 12 years, Cameiro Ranch has only lost track of one cow.
