Moraga Vineyard may very well be the most expensive grape-growing patch in the world. It's a 6-acre plot on the Bel Air estate of Tom Jones, former Chief Executive Officer of Northrop Aviation. Jones bought the land in 1959 from Victor Fleming, the director of Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz.
After 20 years of living on the estate, Jones decided to pursue his interest in grape growing. He and his wife noticed the similarity between the gravelly soil on their Bel Air estate and the soil in some of the top wine growing regions in France. Another plus is the location of the vineyard. It is located just five miles from the ocean. And the microclimate is perfect for growing grapes.
Moraga Vineyard is now known for producing top quality wines in very limited quantities. Some is sold at select wine shops, like The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills. A small percentage is also sold to restaurants. But most is sold directly to customers on the Moraga Vineyard mailing list. If you would like to add your name to the list, please contact Moraga Vineyard at the address or phone number listed below. No visitors please.
