Wine Tech

Where do winemakers and wine enthusiasts go to learn the latest news about the world of winemaking? The WineTECH/GrapeTECH convention in Sacramento! It is the industry's largest American wine trade show and features everything from the latest technology to new marketing ideas.

This year, guests were treated to a speech about wine and health from Dr. R. Curtis Ellison of Boston University. Dr. Ellison is famous for his research on the "French Paradox." The "French Paradox" refers to the fact that in France wine consumption and saturated fat intake are very high, but levels of coronary heart disease are relatively low. Dr. Ellison explains, "We know that if you have a high level of bad cholesterol, the LDL, you're more likely to have a heart attack. There is also the good cholesterol, the HDL, and the most important effect of alcohol is raising the level of this good cholesterol."

But, he says there are many other factors people must consider when it comes to consuming alcohol. Inappropriate use can lead to addiction, an increased risk of accidents, violence, and even fatal illnesses. He also points out that a healthy lifestyle involves eating a good fruit and vegetable based diet, exercise, and not smoking.

Besides this positive news about wine and health, the convention also featured a new trend in winemaking called "Cal-Italia." "Cal-Italia" wines are produced from grapevines that are Italian in origin, but grown in California.

Another highlight of the convention was a bird of prey called a Peregrine Falcon. These birds are known for chasing away the smaller birds that often destroy valuable wine grapes. Tom Stephan, owner of Air Superiority Falconry Services, attended the convention in hopes of gaining support from winemakers. So far, he has not received government approval to conduct his falcon business in vineyards.

The next WineTECH/GrapeTECH convention will be held at the Sacramento Convention Center on January 12th through the 14th in 1999.
