Farm Safety 4 Just Kids

The television crew from California Heartland recently had the chance to meet an extraordinary woman named Marilyn Adams. She has a valuable message to spread not only across California but also across the entire country. She knows firsthand that nothing raised on a farm is more valuable than children. That's because Marilyn lost her 11-year-old son, Keith, in an accident on their Iowa farm back in 1986. He was just one of 300 children who died in farm accidents that year alone.

Keith was helping his dad during the corn harvest. He climbed into a gravity-fed wagon filled with corn, then slipped under and suffocated. It took only seconds for the corn to swallow him up and for his life to end.

The pain of losing Keith was almost too much for Marilyn. In the first year after his death, she even considered taking her own life. But instead she decided to do something positive. She founded an organization called "Farm Safety 4 Just Kids." It teaches children (and adults) how to be safe on family farms, which can be very dangerous places. Just ask Jim Mackey, a California insurance agent. Years ago, his own son witnessed a young friend die in a cotton barn when a rope wrapped around his neck. Jim also recalls an incident where hay bales fell over on a group of schoolchildren on a field trip to a local dairy.

It's concern about accidents like these that recently brought Marilyn to the huge California Farm Equipment Show in Tulare. While there are close to 80 chapters of Farm Safety 4 Just Kids in the United States and Canada, there are none in California, the most powerful ag state in the union.

Marilyn and her staff reached out at the expo with safety decals, videotapes, and printed material that included Marilyn's new book, "Rhythm of the Seasons," which celebrates Keith's short life. All this hard work has begun to pay off. The number of farm fatalities involving children has dropped by more than a third in recent years.
