These days, there is more than one way to shop for your fruits and vegetables. It's called Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) and here's how it works. Basically, consumers buy shares in a local farm. In exchange for paying an average of $18 per week, CSA subscribers receive a portion of the harvest - whatever is in season.
Currently, there are more than 60 CSA farms throughout California, supplying everything from artichokes to zucchini to 6,000 families.
But, before you sign up, remember that like any other investment, there are risks. Crops can fail because of weather. And, unlike at the supermarket, you'll only receive those crops that are in season.
On the web, you can learn more about CSA's by visiting www.eatwell.com. This web site contains information about the "Eat Well" Farm in Dixon, near Sacramento as well as other useful information.
