Indian Peaches
Peaches are harvested in 36-states, but California produces over ninety percent of all US production. It might surprise you to learn who has been working behind the scenes in this major industry. You could say the heartland peach has a distinct international flavor.

Wheat
It's called the staff of life, and it is a vital ingredient in much of the food that feeds the world. It is wheat of course and the heartland plays an important role in bringing it to a hungry international market. It's always hopeful somehow to watch the harvest underway. That's why we decided to observe the annual ritual of reaping the heartland's crop.

Produce Compost
When is waste not wasteful? When it is compost. Organic farmer Pat Herbert knows his compost. On his 700-acre farm in Hollister, Herbert is reaping some nice benefits using a new composting method that makes a big difference in the quality and quantity of his annual yield.

Frozen Yogurt
California is the nation's largest ice cream producer. The heartland makes about 156-gallons per year. That total also includes another member of the frozen dessert family, frozen yogurt. We visited a leading ice cream producer in Union City that makes this healthy alternative.

Sons Of The San Joaquin
There are voices being raised in the heartland. They are singing the praises of the cowboy, past and present. A threesome of heartland family members known as the Sons Of The San Joaquin are re-kindling interest in the songs of the range and the beauty of the cowboy ways.

Festivals
It won't rain forever. Festival season is fast approaching and California Heartland will look ahead to a number of gatherings that celebrate the wealth of the harvests.
